A wind mitigation inspection is one of the cheapest ways to lower a Florida homeowners insurance bill: you pay once, and the report can be used for up to five years. Here is what Tampa Bay inspectors were charging when we checked in October 2026, what moves the price, and how to avoid paying twice.
Typical prices in Tampa Bay (October 2026)
We checked published prices on the websites of several Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco inspection companies in October 2026. Prices change, and many companies only quote by phone, so treat these as a guide rather than a promise:
- Wind mitigation report (OIR-B1-1802): about $115–$130.
- 4-point inspection: about $120–$140.
- Wind mitigation + 4-point in one visit: about $175–$220.
Across the wider market, 2026 price roundups for the Tampa area put the range at about $75–$175 for a wind mitigation report and $75–$200 for a 4-point. Bundled with a full home inspection during a purchase, the wind mitigation add-on is often cheaper still.
What changes the price
- Home size and roof complexity: two-story homes, steep roofs and large footprints take longer to document.
- Attic access: the inspector needs to see roof-deck nailing and roof-to-wall connections, usually from the attic.
- Travel: some inspectors add a fee outside their usual service area.
- Rush scheduling: same-day or next-day reports for a closing or renewal deadline can cost more.
- Re-inspections: a new report after a roof replacement or shutter install is a new inspection, though some inspectors discount repeat customers.
Is it worth it?
Florida insurers must offer credits for qualifying wind-resistive features, applied to the windstorm portion of the premium. On a newer home, or an older home with a hip roof, clips or straps, and full opening protection, the savings can easily be more than the inspection costs in the first year. On an older gable-roof home with no opening protection, the credits may be small. Ask your agent what your current policy assumes before you book. Read how the wind mitigation discount works for what each section of the form looks at.
Free inspections
The state's My Safe Florida Home program has offered free wind mitigation inspections to eligible homeowners when the Legislature funds it. Funding opens and closes, so check the program's official site before paying, especially if you also want a grant for shutters or impact windows.
Who can do the inspection
Florida law lets several kinds of professionals sign the form, including licensed home inspectors who have completed the required hurricane mitigation training, building code inspectors, licensed general, building and residential contractors, professional engineers and architects. Check the license on the DBPR website and ask whether the report includes photos of each item.
